Leathergoods Center of North Texas!
Named for the Comanche Chief, Peta Nocona, our North Central Texas community is located in an area with a rich and colorful history. From Spanish explorers in the early 1500's, to the ranch headquarters known as Jordanville in the 1870's. Our part of North Texas was the major camping and feeding grounds known as Red River Station for the Longhorn cattle headed north on the famous Chisholm Trail. From the Oil Boom discovery days in 1922 to being the Leathergoods Center of North Texas, Nocona has seen and been a part of it all.
The original home and birthplace of one of the most famous names in Cowboy boots. The tradition lives on with Montague Boot Company which proudly maintains our 100 plus year old reputation of quality Cowboy boot craftsmanship. Nocona remains the center for national and international recognized leathergood companies such as Nocona Belt Company, Nocona Athletic Goods and Texas Turf Supplies. Manufacturers of high quality saddles, suspenders, tack, belts, wallets, purses and numerous other leathergood products, with Nocona Athletic Goods being an industry leader in football, baseball and sports safety equipment. While the leathergoods industry is still a mainstay in Nocona's economics and employment, other local manufacturing such as Diamond Cut Jeans, plus our cattle, oil, aviation parts, heavy equipment sales, farming and ranching industries are always a major part of the Nocona lifestyle.
Our local Volunteer Fire Dept. sponsored Fourth of July, Halloween and Christmas activities, along with other local merchant and civic sponsored functions throughout the year, keep our Nocona residents and visitors with an abundant list of fun family days. One of our most popular is the Fun Days and Car Show the third weekend each May. Each June brings the annual Lake Nocona Sailboat Regatta on our beautiful 1,500 acre lake and, in July, our annual Chisholm Trail Rodeo and Parade is fun for the whole family. Several golf tournaments at Nocona's Indian Oaks Golf Club and Nocona Hills Country Club take place each summer.
The "Discover Nocona" project will soon be bringing even more events to our area to promote the "Texas Main Street" program. One such event, starting each Fall and ending early Spring, will be the very popular "Nocona Nights" Winter Texas Music Series, featuring some of the best local and area musicians and artist in our North Texas region.
Plans for the North Montague County Historical Society and Museum are rapidly approaching the completion of it's first of three phases. Soon, visitors to Nocona will be able to visit the museum and view the artifacts and photos that chronicle our interesting and varied history. Stop at our Nocona Visitors Center and Texas Trails Art Gallery for a tour of some of our talented local artist's paintings and crafts. Visit the Chamber office, located in the Visitors Center building, and browse through the free information brochures about several of the interesting areas of our great community.
